Imagine not being able to read this sentence, or even to comprehend the English language. It is impossible for you to imagine, but for 23% of the adult population in our country, it's a fact of life.
Literacy Volunteers of Leon County works to put an end to the literacy problem in our country, and in our own backyard. The literacy program enables trained volunteers to work one-to-one with adults helping them to learn how to read and write, or speak English, at no cost to the student.
LVLC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and increase literacy in the community. Our administrative office is located on the third floor of the library and staffs part-time and full-time employees dedicated to the cause of literacy.
Literacy Volunteers of Leon County is supported, in part, by the Friends of the Leon County Public Library, the United Way of the Big Bend, and through local fundraising events.
A board of directors, made up of tutors, students, interested professionals and community leaders, sets policy, oversees operations, raises funds and promotes literacy.
Our organization is affiliated with and accredited by Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA). Founded in 1962, LVA provides high-quality models for instruction and program management. In 2002, LVA merged with Laubach Literacy International, and the new organization appears under the name ProLiteracy Worldwide.
