Literacy Volunteers of Leon County (LVLC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and increase literacy in the community. LVLC enables trained volunteers to work one-to-one with adults helping them to learn how to read and write, or speak English, at no cost to the student.
Our administrative office is located on the third floor of the main Leon County Library. We have a full time staff which provides training to new tutors, holds workshops for established tutors, maintains a resource room that has many materials for use by our learners, and performs many other administrative functions.
We have a Board of Directors, made up of tutors, students, interested professionals and community leaders. The Board sets policy, oversees operations, raises funds, and promotes literacy.
Literacy Volunteers of Leon County is supported, in part, by the Friends of the Leon County Public Library, the United Way of the Big Bend, and through local fundraising events.
Our organization is affiliated with and accredited by Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA). Founded in 1962, LVA provides high-quality models for instruction and program management. In 2002, LVA merged with Laubach Literacy International, and the new organization appears under the name ProLiteracy Worldwide.
LVLC is sponsored by the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library. We are a member agency of United Way of the Big Bend and work in partnership with:
LVLC sponsors a Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) Literacy Project. VISTA members recruit volunteers and participate in literacy outreach projects, grant writing projects and work in family literacy programs. VISTA members serve in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Leon, Madison and Washington Counties.
